If anything, you’d think optical illusions on the road would be dangerous. But in London, transportation operators are using optical illusions as part of a crusade to make the roads safer—and it’s working!

Since summer 2017, Transport for London (TFL) has painted 45 false, totally two-dimensional “speed bumps” in undisclosed locations on local roads. These fake speed bumps are basically the less cool, more practical version of 3D street art. They have the exact same black-and-white design as real London speed bumps, except they’re all paint and no height.

These false bumps get the job done without the drawbacks of actual speed bumps, which include road pollution, noise and high cost. And they’re just as effective in making drivers slow down. Simply out of force of habit, drivers slow down when they see that black-and-white pattern. Plus, they don’t know for sure whether or not it’s real, and they don’t want to run the risk of hurtling over a real bump at full speed, so they brake. TFL, which maintains some of the city’s busiest roads, tried out this fake-speed-bump method on a smaller scale a couple years ago. Since that trial, average driver speeds did drop noticeably.

According to The Daily Mailother boroughs of London have begun adopting this practice. Nigel Hardy, head of sponsorship for TFL, laid out the ultimate goal of the illusory speed bumps: “We are working hard to create a road network which is free from death or serious injury.”

Your average morning can be an obstacle course—a gauntlet where the endgame is usually just getting to work on time. By the time you’re showered, fed, and out the door wearing pants, the last thing you want to deal with is foggy car windows.

A condensation-covered windshield isn’t just annoying, it’s just plain dangerous. It tends to subside with time and enough air system finagling, but there’s actually a quicker way to de-fog your windshield. All you need is three things: a tube sock, a roll of packing tape, and some kitty litter.

How to stop car windows from fogging up

Now, when you head off to the pet store, make sure you get silica kitty litter (the crystalline kind, not the rock kind.) The tape type doesn’t matter. When it comes to your sock selection, opt for the athletic kind, as you want the material to be as high-wicking as possible.

Take your sock and place the roll of tape at the top of the tube and push it in so that the centre of the roll makes the cuff of the sock plenty wide. Take your kitty litter and fill the sock up to about where your ankle would begin and then tie it off tight at that point. Now that you have your “litter bomb,” place it on your dashboard every time you park and leave your car. Your foggy car windows will be a thing of the past.

The reason why this hack works all comes down to the litter. The silica is any incredibly efficient wicking agent that readily sucks water vapour from the air, and, in a pinch, condensation right from your windshield.

If executed correctly, this hack will make sure that there isn’t any fog in your car in the first place. If you accidentally bring it in the house, don’t sweat it, as you can run the litter bomb along the windshield to get better results than your hand or a hand towel. [Source: Lifehacker]

Ever heard someone brag about running racing oil in a muscle car? Well, the joke’s on them, because racing oil isn’t meant for daily or even occasional driving. In fact, running racing oil in a non-track vehicle can increase the likelihood of sludge buildup in the engine. And, it can damage the $1,200 catalytic converter.

Racing oil vs. regular oil

Racing oil contains three times more anti-wear and friction reducing additives (for less wear and more horsepower) than ordinary oil. To make room for that spiked dose, the manufacturers yank the detergent, anticorrosive, antifoam and dispersant additives—precisely the additives you need most to keep your street engine running clean for 5,000 kilometres.

The bottom line: Racing oil is for racing only.

What you should know about racing oil:

  • Race teams use lower-viscosity oil with more friction modifiers to qualify. Then they change to a higher-viscosity oil for the race.
  • Racing teams go through racing oil at the rate of about 1,900 litres of oil per car, per season.
  • In a typical NASCAR race, oil temps can run as high as 160°C.
  • Pit crews bring about 56 litres of oil to every race.
  • Teams analyze the oil after every race. They check for viscosity change, the level of metals worn away, oxidation (indicates how the oil held up to heat) and additive depletion.

Now that you know the breakdown of racing oil vs. regular oil, find out if you should switch to a high mileage oil filter.

Life turns on a dime. Or, in the case of Darrel and Brenda Frisken, on a chance reunion in April 2017 with old friends at Mr. Bill’s Family Restaurant near their hometown of Lloydminster, Saskatchewan. The other couple had just returned after spending the winter travelling in an RV.

As their friends described life on the road, a light went off for Darrel. The commercial HVAC and refrigeration technician, now 62, wanted to retire but didn’t yet know how: “I enjoyed my work, but I’d enjoyed almost all I could stand.” Brenda, now 61, had retired from her receptionist job at a retirement home and was happy enough in Lloydminster. As the Friskens, who’ve been married for 40 years, talked it over in the following days—going south for the winter, seeing more of their grandkids, boondocking (dry camping) under the stars—a fanciful idea became a plan.

They set about researching RVs, reading reviews and attending RV shows. A big motorhome was costly and awkward: you might want to tow a small vehicle for when you’re hooked up in a park. A travel trailer, which is towed, is long and difficult to manoeuvre in tight spots. A converted van was too small for them.

RV living - Darrel and Brenda Frisken
The Friskens share moments from their travels on a blog.

After months of deliberation, they decided that a fifth wheel—an RV that overlaps a towing vehicle, which supports much of the RV’s weight—was the ticket. Online they found the perfect setup: a 2016, 10-metre fifth wheel, and a used, low-mileage 2017 pickup truck. They got them both for less than $90,000.

George Carlin had a funny routine about how life is basically a process of gradually accumulating stuff. It took the Friskens over a year to downsize from their 2,200-square foot detached bungalow to their 320-sq.ft. home on wheels. Anything that wasn’t sold, taken by their two grown kids or donated to charity got hauled to the dump.

Then in March 2020, the pandemic happened. “The day the For Sale sign went up on the house is the day the first lockdown was announced,” says Darrel. “We didn’t know if the real estate market was going to crash.” Three months later they sold their bungalow for $310,000. Debt-free, with income from the house sale and from the couple’s mutual funds, they figure they can live in the RV indefinitely.

“Half our family thought it was cool,” says Darrel, “and the other half thought we were nuts.” You’ll get on each other’s nerves, was one prediction. How will you find time for yourself in such tight quarters? “We have headphones,” says Brenda, “so I can be watching a movie while he plays his guitar.” They each have a Kindle, and they watch workout DVDs together. Darrel goes on vigorous hikes, and Brenda goes for daily walks.

Their fifth wheel

“You’d better be compatible, and you’d better be sure you both really want to do it. So far, no problem,” says Darrel. “You have to be really well organized—everything has its place—and we’re both pretty good about that.”

In the summer and fall of 2020, because the United States border was still closed, they visited family and friends in Saskatchewan and Alberta. It turned out lots of cooped-up people hit the road during the pandemic. RV sales went through the roof, demand pushed prices up and parks were booked months in advance. With so many stymied snowbirds stuck in Canada, the Friskens were extremely lucky—after making scores of inquiries—to find a pretty spot at River Valley RV Park in Keremeos, B.C., about half an hour from Penticton, where they settled in from October 2020 to April 2021.

Did they miss being part of their old neighbourhood? Not really. Doing without a dishwasher and washing machine was a drawback, but not a game changer. Trips to town every few days to discharge sewage and take on fresh water took only a couple of hours. FaceTime and Zoom let them stay in touch with family and friends. And RVers, like boaters, bond quickly, trade information and form a mobile community of their own. Darrel started a blog (RV Full Time on a Dime) and posted about everything from B.C. fruit stands and winter hiking to the best toilet paper to use in an RV (Great Value, at Walmart).

This year, Arizona beckons, including leisurely stops in Utah and other states en route. With Darrel being a handy guy and Brenda managing their finances, they live frugally (“We’re tightwads,” says Darrel). If all goes well, they plan to spend the next 10 years seeing new places, avoiding prairie winters and visiting friends and family. If they’re overtaken by ill health or misfortune, they’ll rent a condo.

As for dry camping under the starry sky, the Friskens have already done it a few times. They have solar power, so it’s just a matter of loading up with water and propane. The Friskens plan on boondocking more in the U.S. though, where spots are plentiful—after all, their first time wasn’t in the wilderness. It was in a Walmart parking lot.

You can think of the 12 zodiac signs as neighbours. They each have their own personality and characteristics, meanings based on myths that started in antiquity and have been honed in practice ever since. Each falls into one of four zodiac sign elements: fire, earth, water, or air. These, too, are like a community, says astrologer Alice Sparkly Kat, author of Postcolonial Astrology. Consider how you get along better with some of your neighbours and how you might vibe less with others.

Wherever your sign sits on the zodiac wheel, the fourth sign to its left and the fourth sign to its right will be in the same element. They form a triangle, and as Sparkly Kat says, “the most stable aspect in astrology is the triangle.” This zodiac compatibility is why the best friend for your zodiac sign often shares the same element as you.

You actually have all the zodiac elements in your full natal chart, but knowing your sun sign element is a great starting point. (Your sun sign is determined by the month and day of your birth, and it’s what most people refer to when they ask what sign you are.) It can reveal your zodiac sign’s power colour, the best dog breed for your zodiac sign and even your biggest fears. Read on to learn the zodiac signs elements and find out how they apply to you.

Zodiac fire signs - Aries Leo Sagittarius

Fire Signs: Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius

Bold. Spirited. Passionate. Fire signs are fiery. They’re bright, artistic, and intense. Fire signs are known for their confidence, especially when the going gets tough. Sparkly Kat advises that “fire signs want to think fast on their feet, and they don’t mind pressure.” You’ll find these signs are brave and independent. They’re filled with optimism and the kind of courage that fuels action.

In relationships

Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius in combination create sparks. Fire signs make excellent duos in friendships, romances, or any other kind of partnership. These zodiac signs have adventurous, energetic relationships filled with passion—and they’re not scared of conflict. In fact, they may find inspired debate, what some would think of as fighting, totally exciting. Fire signs cultivate community through group projects, where they take the lead and inspire others to act.

Top values

Fire signs take pride in spontaneity. They’re willing to take risks when it comes to finances, occupations, and projects. That’s because they deeply value what makes them feel passionate and enthused. They often value courage in themselves and others. If you’re a fire sign, you probably still love the things you bought on a whim. Fire signs are not afraid to splurge, especially if an object inspires its spirit. (These mindful shopping tips can help make sure you’re not too impulsive!)

Self-care strategies

Fire signs best engage in self-care through impromptu creativity. Pull out paints and create something vibrant and abstract. Sports with a competitive edge, even if it’s beating your own personal best, are also enjoyable. Fire signs thrive with instinctive action. A campfire or candle flames may prove to be a great way to relax. Follow your bliss.

Zodiac earth signs - Taurus Virgo Capricorn

Earth Signs: Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn

Grounded. Cultivated. Practical. Earth signs are definitely down-to-earth. They are the gardeners of the zodiac. And they probably think of everything as a garden, from their family to their friendships. Earth signs recognize that communities need care, tending, and feeding. “When you’re an earth sign, you want to build something slowly,” says Sparkly Kat. “You don’t have to see results tomorrow; you believe in the long haul.”

In relationships

When Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn get together, the chemistry is fueled with mutual respect for one another’s rationality. Every community needs level-headed earth signs to remember the details and to keep everyone’s feet on the ground. When it comes to romance, earth signs will recognize in each other a steady realism that they can depend upon. And you can bet every friend group or work cohort needs an earth sign to keep everyone on task and focused.

Top values

Earth signs value having their ducks in a row. They also care about details. If you’re an earth sign, you might remember everyone’s birthdays, their favourite kinds of cake, and what would make the best gift. You value possessions that will last and luxuries that are worth the money because they were created with care. Earth signs value sustainability, secret ingredients, and classics that endure. Be careful of being too materialistic. One thing about earth signs is they’re practical, but they also go big when it matters to them.

Self-care strategies

If you’re an earth sign, you’re mindful of tending to others, but it’s also important to take good care of yourself by choosing a hobby that fits your zodiac sign. Gardening, in various forms, is an ideal pastime. Plant seeds. Get your hands in the dirt. Walk barefoot on grass and earth. That’s the kind of self-care that makes you feel right at home.

Zodiac air signs - Gemini Libra and Aquarius

Air Signs: Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius

Witty. Social. Intellectual. Air signs can be a touch spacey. Their heads are in the clouds or thinking through solutions or pondering the future. Sparkly Kat explains that when you’re an air sign, “you’re influenced easily by other people, but you listen to others equally because you listen to everyone and have interesting ideas bouncing around.”

In relationships

Air signs often find challenges the most interesting aspects of relationships of any sort. They’ll be wooed by partners or friends who keep them curious. They’ll also appreciate someone who is really great at talking. When it comes to groups, air signs want to work for the greater good, and they love parties—even if they sometimes watch from a distance so they can think about what’s best for the group as a whole.

Top values

If you’re a Gemini, Aquarius, or Libra (one of the most polite zodiac signs), your two favourite things are likely people and ideas. Of all the zodiac signs elements, this one yields wonderful teachers and party planners. Both activities cultivate community and allow air signs to express their passions. They can imagine a better world, and they are most fulfilled when they can get busy creating it. They sometimes run the risk of too much detachment, so they value things that are truly meaningful or highly functional.

Self-care strategies

Air signs tend to be anxious because they’re always thinking. Great self-care practices include puzzles of any kind. Focus can soothe an air sign’s racing mind. They also appreciate calmness. Sitting outside in a cool breeze is an ideal way to relax. Remember to eat and hydrate and let yourself get swept away by music. Find out the best ways to de-stress based on your zodiac sign.

Zodiac water signs - Cancer Scorpio Pisces

Water Signs: Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces

Imaginative. Emotional. Intuitive. Water signs flow. They are naturals when it comes to fluid motion as they go through their days. If you’re a Cancer, Scorpio, or Pisces, you’re likely very in touch with your emotions. “You want to be of service in some way toward your community,” says Sparkly Kat of water signs. “You’ll play an important role, but maybe you’re not the loudest voice.”

In relationships

Water signs are very nurturing in relationships of all kinds because they’re naturally empathetic. They tend to have a strong intuitive sense about everyone’s needs. It’s easy for water signs to form deep connections because of their sensitive nature. They’re likely to respond if someone reaches out, and it’s super important for them to connect and feel connected.

Top values

When it comes to zodiac signs elements’ sentimentality, Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces take the cake. They have a reputation for being dreamy but don’t mistake that for ineffectual. Water signs are intense and deep. They’re detectives of the psyche and the soul. They make wonderful creatives, psychologists, marine biologists, or tarot card readers. Water signs love beauty, art, and anything that moves them—that’s where they find value in life.

Self-care strategies

If you’re a water sign, you may have a tendency to be overwhelmed by empathy. Boundaries are essential for self-care. Block off “you” time and stay committed to space so you can recharge and renew. Get yourself a luxury bath bomb, dim the lights, let the steam rise, and take a long soak. You’re sure to feel rejuvenated. Of course, swimming or hanging out by the beach or a lake will also prove naturally soothing.

By the time November 1 comes around, there’s a good chance you have a pumpkin or two around your house. As jack-o’-lanterns, they make great decorations, but once the carving and trick-or-treating is over, don’t just toss them in the trash. There are lots of great ways to use pumpkins in and around the yard in the weeks ahead.

What to Do With Pumpkins After Halloween

Share Pumpkin Seeds with Birds

Many people roast and eat pumpkin seeds themselves, but you can also share them with birds. Larger wild birds like blue jays love pumpkin seeds, too. Offer it on a tray feeder or just sprinkle on the ground for birds to enjoy (no salt or seasoning, please!). (Discover more ways to attract birds in your backyard.)

Turn Your Pumpkin into a Bird Feeder

Hollow out your pumpkin and fill it with birdseed for an inexpensive and easy DIY bird feeder. (If you’ve already hollowed it out and carved it as a jack-o’-lantern, the heavy lifting is done!)

Share Pumpkins with Wildlife

Offer the pumpkin pieces for wildlife like deer and rabbits.

Save Seeds to Plant in Spring

If you have a garden, set aside a handful of seeds to plant in the spring. Rinse and dry the seeds in a cool dry place for several weeks and then store until next year. (Check out our guide to growing successful seedlings.)

Make Compost

If nothing else, at least compost your pumpkins when you’re done with them. They break down nicely and offer lots of great nutrients for soil.

Use Pumpkins For Baking

It turns out even those pretty pink pumpkins are perfectly edible! Check out these healthy pumpkin recipes for inspiration.

There are plenty of suggestions out there for how to prevent less-than-pleasant odours in your bathroom. However, thanks to a handy trick we spotted on TipHero, there’s a way to eliminate icky bathroom smells that doesn’t require a daily spray, or a touch-up every time you go. In fact, you only have to do this as often as you change your toilet paper roll, and it works just as well.

All you need is a toilet paper roll—it doesn’t even have to be full—and some essential oil. Try citrus scents, which can overpower other odours, plus they have a “clean” smell. Place five or so drops of the oil on the inside of the cardboard toilet paper roll, and voilà! Your bathroom will be filled with a pleasant (but not over-the-top) aura of citrus, or whichever scent you’ve chosen.

What makes this technique so cool is that, while you don’t actually have to do anything each time you use the toilet, the scent still kicks in whenever you do. Rolling the fragrant toilet paper roll tosses the scent around and “re-activates” it. The nice smell will last you till the end of the roll.

Be careful, though, that the oil doesn’t get on the paper itself. Many essential oils can irritate the skin, especially the sensitive areas that, you know, TP habitually comes into contact with. If the oil does manage to seep through the cardboard, you’re probably best off not using the last couple squares of paper. However, aside from that, you really can’t go wrong with this trick!

Ukrainian Canadian Heritage - Baba's Quilt
The embroidered quilt Tracy uncovered.

Discovering My Baba’s Quilt

My mother, Eileen Perreault, was Ukrainian Canadian. Shortly after her passing in 2010, I looked through her cedar chest and came across a quilt that belonged to her parents. “Baba”—my maternal grandmother, Anne Andrychuk —and “Gidi”—my maternal grandfather, William “Wasyl” Wlasichuk—were married for more than 60 years. They passed away in 1988 and 1987, respectively. They lived in Kamsack, Saskatchewan—the “Garden of Saskatchewan.” It’s on the Assiniboine River Valley, on Treaty 4 Territory.

My grandparents and great-grandparents emigrated from Kitsman, in the Chernivtsi region of Bukovyna, Ukraine. The Andrychuks came to Canada in 1899, while the Wlasichuks arrived in 1913. Other family members also immigrated here over time.

Ukrainian Canadian Heritage - Baba In Ukrainian Embroidery
Tracy’s Baba, as a teen, in her embroidered Ukrainian clothing.

I was elated to discover this family quilt! Each square was hand-embroidered and showcased either the names or initials of the women who created them. Many women also added the names of their villages and towns. When the individual squares were completed, they were returned to my grandmother, who then crocheted all of them together. This unique quilt was created in 1941-42 and was still in impeccable condition when I found it.

Delving into My Genealogy

This discovery inspired me to go on a journey of exploration into my family. For the past two years, I have been piecing together the history of this quilt with my cousins Susan Bodnard (in Saskatchewan) and Cheryl Walker (in Alberta). We learned that the women in my grandmother’s circle enjoyed embroidering during those long, cold winters on the farm. They even did so by the light of a kerosene lamp in the evenings, as electricity was not yet available in rural Saskatchewan. They would mail squares to one another and the recipients would add their own unique embroidered patterns, then return the squares to the senders, who would form quilts by joining their squares together.

Wlasichuk Family Portrait - Our Canada
Baba, Gidi and family.

An Incredible Journey

Delving into my genealogy, I have been able to identify each of the women who contributed to my family quilt. Most of them are my relatives, and I have been in contact with several of their descendants.

What an incredible discovery and journey it has been to have this quilt as a piece of my cultural heritage! It is truly a family heirloom that represents the history and memory of my Ukrainian relatives!

Those who worked on the squares include my great-grandmother (Polly), my grandmother and mother, my aunt (Mary), great-aunts and cousins. All were from early pioneer families who lived in areas around Yorkton, Saskatchewan, such as Veregin, Dnieper and Rhein. From the late 1800s to the Second World War, they emigrated and settled in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. They were, indeed, part of the first few waves of Ukrainians who came to Canada.

Ukrainian Canadian Ribbon

Supporting Ukraine

Although I’m very proud and appreciative of having inherited this quilt, my cousins and I feel it is equally important to share its history with others. Therefore, we have decided to donate the quilt to the Ukrainian Museum of Canada, in Saskatoon. In light of current events in Ukraine, I strongly believe in the importance of sharing our Ukrainian-Canadian history, our heritage and our cultural practices. In doing so, we are demonstrating our continued support and our connection to Ukraine.

To help in the fundraising for Ukrainian refugees, I donated 40 of my baba’s vintage pysanky—Ukrainian Easter egg—and some Ukrainian patterned ceramics. I also created “Tracy’s Sunflowers–Stand With Ukraine” ribbon-pins to help raise awareness and funds. The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral in Ottawa was very supportive in this effort. With the Department of Canadian Heritage, they also asked me to make ribbons for then-Prince Charles and then-Duchess of Cornwall Camilla and their entourage for their May 2022 visit with Ottawa’s Ukrainian community. What an honour that was! My greatest sense of accomplishment is in knowing I am helping raise awareness for Ukrainian refugees.

I am proud to be Ukrainian Canadian and, of course, also French Canadian. I believe my mother, Eileen, my grandparents Anne and Wasyl, my aunts Mary, Sylvia and Jenny, my uncles Mike and Nick, and other Ukrainian relatives would be happy to know that we, the next generations, continue to be proud of our Ukrainian heritage.

We can all agree that everyone loves new ways to improve on old favourites. Do you know how to make a perfect hard-boiled egg? Or how to use a hairdryer for the best-ever Thanksgiving turkey? Now you do!

One of the latest and greatest kitchen hacks involves upgrading your grilled cheese with one simple secret ingredient: mayonnaise.

How do you make a grilled cheese with mayo?

The best part of many recipe tweaks is that they’re often easy and incorporate ingredients most people already have in the house. That’s definitely the case with this. You switch out the usual butter on a grilled cheese sandwich and using mayo instead, a trick we learned on Reddit.

It’s so easy! All you have to do is coat the outside of your sandwich bread with mayonnaise before you pan-fry it, creating a crispy flavourful crust almost reminiscent of garlic bread.

Sometimes food hacks seem so simple, we ask ourselves “Why didn’t we think of that?”

Of course, you can kick things up a notch by using flavoured mayonnaise. Maybe garlic or basil? You could even dredge the bread in grated cheese like Parmesan or Cotija to recreate the flavour of grilled street corn. (Here are more mayonnaise hacks you’ll wish you’d known sooner.)

Why is mayo better for grilled cheese?

It might seem strange to use mayo to make a grilled cheese, but it makes perfect sense when you think about the ingredients used to make mayonnaise—that creamy texture comes from whipping egg yolks and oil. Using mayo instead of butter to make grilled cheese results in a rich, golden brown exterior, and some say the taste is even better than butter!

Next, check out 10+ inspired grilled cheese recipes that’ll take your favourite comfort food to the next level.
