Five new releases worth watching this month.
1. Elysium
District 9 director Neill Blomkamp helms this sci-fi thriller starring Matt Damon as a have-not who breaks out of the slums of Earth and into the orbiting one-per-center paradise guarded by Jodie Foster. Seems like it could be an allegory for something… In theatres Aug. 9.
2. Oblivion
Man ordered to leave post-apocalyptic Earth for outer space isn’t certain he wants to go. On DVD and Blu-Ray Aug. 6.
3. After Earth
Father-and-son duo from outer space crash-land on post-apocalyptic Earth.
4. The World’s End
The semi-insane team behind Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead trades nefarious villagers and zombies for nefarious robot villagers in a tale of old friends on an epic pub-crawl turned very, very messy. In theatres Aug. 23
5. Seconds
Do-overs are a definite don’t in this nightmarish 1966 drama featuring John Randolph as a family man who literally reinvents himself (into Rock Hudson), thanks to an organization called The Company. A terrifying analysis of identity and wish fulfillment, it’s rumoured to be the film that pushed Beach Boy Brian Wilson over the edge. On DVD and Blu-ray Aug. 13
