Ingredients
1 cup butter, softened
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup plus 3 tablespoons confectioners’ sugar
2 tablespoons milk
Food coloring, as desired
Chocolate chips, raisins or red hots for decorating
Directions
Step 1:
Preheat oven to 325°F. In a large bowl, beat butter, sugar, and vanilla until light and fluffy. Stir in flour to blend well. For each snowman, shape dough into 3 balls, measuring approximately 1 inch, 3/4 inch, and 1/2 inch. Place on ungreased cookie sheet with the sides of the balls touching, and gently press together. Space snowmen about 1 inch apart. Insert raisins or red hots for eyes, buttons, etc. Bake 18 minutes. Transfer to racks to cool completely.
Step 2:
To make icing, combine 1 cup confectioners’ sugar with just enough milk to make a smooth icing. Add food coloring one drop at a time until icing is desired shade. Spoon into a pastry bag fitted with a writing tip. Or use a plastic bag and snip the tip from one corner to make a small hole. Pipe icing scarf on each snowman, and place a dab of icing on head to attach a chocolate chip "hat." Sprinkle lightly with remaining confectioners’ sugar. Store in covered tins.
